Energy Champions – Lower Cost and Environmental Impact

Energy Champions – Lower Cost and Environmental Impact

Lead your organization on a path toward environmentally sustainable business practices by increasing bottom-line profits through energy efficiency

Series Description

The United States Energy Information Administration projects long-term price increases for both electricity and natural gas over the next 20 years. As the impacts of the recent global Climate Change Accord in Copenhagen and EPA’s recent Greenhouse Gas emission reporting requirements for large dischargers take effect, additional pressure will be placed on businesses, institutions and governments to improve their performance per unit of energy consumed.

Organizations that fail to realize the increasing strategic impact of its energy consumption practices will be at a competitive disadvantage as prices and regulations for inefficient use become additional costs.

Managers and owners are becoming increasingly aware of the potential to reduce their organization’s operating costs by indentifying energy wasting and implementing energy saving opportunities. However, most organizations do not currently have the in-house expertise to lead an effective energy efficiency initiative.

In response, the Michigan Alternative Renewable Energy Center (MAREC) at GVSU, the Michigan Manufacturers Technology Center-West, Sustainable Research Group and its partners are offering a five part program to develop energy champions by adding new tools to their portfolio of skills and to benefit their organizations.

Output/Benefits for joining the Energy Champions:

When your enterprise is running at optimal efficiency, you not only maximize your company’s use of time and resources—you can dramatically reduce its impact on the environment. The result? Lower environmental impact, measurable cost savings and a clear competitive advantage in an increasingly aggressive and environmentally conscious market. The main challenge thus becomes how to approach the unique set of issues each organization will be faced with regarding energy consumption and efficiency opportunities. The five focused sessions in our program will address this challenge. The initial sessions will focus on providing a strong foundation for an individual to identify, collect and analyze energy data. Follow on sessions will help participants determine specific actions that can be taken to reduce energy use and cost.

Targeted Participants

Energy efficiency is an innovative and profitable tool for all sectors of the economy where energy is used natural gas, electricity or other forms to manufacture a product or to deliver a service. Energy efficiency improvements will benefit all forms of enterprise; whether structured as profit or nonprofit entities. Targeted participants include individuals from:

·         Manufacturing facilities

·         Commercial/Retail enterprises

·         Institutional organizations (churches, hospitals, colleges and universities)

·         Governments (county and local municipalities)

Curriculum (Five 2-hour sessions) Start Date June 22, 2011

Session One:                      June 22nd                                              Energy Accounting and Management Systems

Session Two:                      July 6th                                                    Energy Audits and Building Envelop

Session Three:                  July 20th                                                  HVAC and Lighting Systems

Annual Southwest Michigan CE Marathon

The Southwest Michigan Chapter of AIA and the Southwest Branch of USGBC West Michigan have partnered to present the Annual Southwest CE Marathon.

Industry professionals have been invited to present programs that meet either the AIA Continuing Education System or the GBCI Credential Maintenance Program requirements, or preferably, both. We plan to bring you 16 different presentations; two to choose from each hour.

By attending you will have an opportunity to obtain up to 8 continuing education learning units and/or CE hours towards the GBCI CMP from presentations of manufacturers or service provider representatives for the architectural industry and/or sustainable industry all in one place on one day.

Each presentation will be given only once and are totally independent from each other. You will be requested to sign-in at each presentation. The vendors, or the chapter, will take care of all the paper work associated with receiving your AIA Learning Units. The GBCI CMP is a self-reporting program and therefore you will be responsible for reporting your CE hours under this program.

A nominal fee is being charged for this event to cover the balance of costs not covered by the presenter’s sponsorship.

We look forward to a successful meeting day and your valued participation.

Discovering Sustainability: A West Michigan Conversation

Over the last twenty years West Michigan has demonstrated leadership in sustainability. We're contacting thought leaders in the region in an effort to explore ways in which we further this momentum. Please join us Thursday, October 15 for Discovering Sustainability: A West Michigan Conversation. You will be joining a group of individuals who are taking action and influencing others in order to assure our region's financial prosperity, social equity and the integrity of our natural ecosystems. There is no cost to attend.

We will begin to capture the collection of our energy, vision and creativity that will help us move toward a conscious design - a design moving us to further sustainability in the region.

The West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum, and other partners are convening this daylong conversation, will be held from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at Aquinas College's Wege Center. Thanks to grant funding by the Tipping Point Network and the support of our host, the Center for Sustainability at Aquinas College, there is no registration fee, but all participants will be expected to engage others as we map our assets and activities - there will be several, small, break-out sessions and opportunities to discuss with similarly-minded organizations.

While there is no charge to attend, there is a prerequisite. Please fill in this very brief online survey which has been designed to identify the strengths our region already possesses for this creative and collaborative endeavor. Completion of the survey is required to register you for the event.

If you have questions, email Kyle Ten Broeke at kyle@wmsbf.org or call 616.723.0525. For additional information on this project, please call Marylu Dykstra at 616.868.6306 or Deborah Steketee at 616.632.2930

Innovative Applications of Wood in Large Scale Building Designs by Marianne Berube, Executive Director, Ontario Wood WORKS! Over the past several years Ontario has been recognized for significant development in large scale building designs using wood. Changes to the building codes, engineered wood products and the benefits to sustainable building have made it possible to integrate wood with other construction materials on large and complex projects. This presentation will walk through several case studies that have illustrated the challenges and opportunities for using wood in health care (hospitals and long term care facilities), community centres and libraries

AGO Transformation:  Advanced Use of CNC Technology, Sophisticated Connection Design  by David Moses, PhD, P.Eng., PE, LEED®AP, Equilibrium Consulting Inc. In 2008, the Art Gallery of Ontario re-opened after a significant expansion and renovation by architect Frank Gehry.  A significant part of the new construction is the glass curtain wall supported by glued-laminated timber. A five-storey tower and an extensive 3,600 sq. ft. central skylight feature rectilinear glulam mullion grids, while the feature Galleria running for 500 feet along Dundas Street is entirely curvilinear. Creating this complex geometry where no two pieces are alike, with slender cross sections and significant forces was made possible by the use of CNC machines and the 3D CAD systems that feed them. The challenging fabrication procedure, erection sequence and hidden connection design were all possible thanks to the tremendous advances in these technologies in the last 10 years.

Time: 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Agenda:

Introduction

Forum Address on Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

Sub Basin Reports

Forum Leadership Selection

Summary:  The Great Lakes are recognized throughout the world as a crucial part of our environment and economy. These treasured resources are worthy of recent national actions to preserve them for future generations. Closer to home, our local communities and families are suffering from the ravages of a declining industrial base while their elected officials are scrambling to fix numerous holes in nearly all sectors of our economy, both private and public.

The Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds (LGROW) is being founded on the premise that government alone cannot bring about required levels of collaboration necessary to complete our aim: Connecting clean and healthy waters of the Grand River Watershed to life in southern Michigan and throughout the Great Lakes Basin.

Please join us on Friday, November 6, 2009, for our Fall Grand River Forum. The Forum will be held at the GVSU Eberhard Center and will convene citizens, businesses, institutional leaders, community and civic groups, and members from all levels of government. Your active participation at this meeting will ensure our success as a regional organization doing the work we all need to do for the Grand and our shared Great Lakes waterways
