The U.S. Green Building Council West Michigan Chapter is offering a facilitated study group to prepare individuals for the challenging LEED Green Associate (GA) Examination. These study groups differ from instructor-led courses and rely on the strength of the facilitator and the active participation of the learners. Study group sessions are a combination of facilitated, peer-to-peer discussion and personal study and will provide participants with the ability to explain green building concepts and strategies, apply test-taking strategies, navigate exam structure and prepare them to sit for the exam. Study group participants should have the prerequisite knowledge of the subject matter covered in the LEED GA Candidate Handbook. They will also need study the content of the  Green  Building and LEED Core Concepts Guide, First Edition. This guide must be purchased separately through the USGBC website. This study group is not eligible towards GBCI’s LEED Professional Credential Maintenance Program (CMP). After successful completion of the study group, candidates may provide their Certificate of Completion in lieu of a letter of attestation to sit for the LEED Green Associate Exam.

Classes will be held at the Tassell M-TEC located at  622 Godfrey Ave. SW,  Grand Rapids,  MI,  49503  

Facilitated classes begin will meet bi-weekly from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on the following dates:

1.) March 9, 2010* 2.) March 23, 2010* 3.) April 6, 2010* 4.) April 20, 2010* *Additionally, participants will separate into smaller groups and meet for an additional 5 hours between classes.

The total program includes 6 hours of facilitated group discussion and 20 hours for informal small group study.

 

Registration Fees for the course: Due March 1st to avoid a late fee.

Local USGBC Chapter Member $100.00 each. See below for benefits of Local membership! Non-member $125.00 each.

Green  Building and LEED Core Concepts Guide, First Edition (E-Book) $35.00 purchased separately

This study group is registered for 24 LUs (HSW/SD) with AIA/CES, with three more if you take the LEED GA exam. Please include your AIA number with your registration if you wish to take advantage of this offer.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program satisfying eligibility requirements for the LEED Green Associate exam.

Course Registration Fees

USGBC Local members = $100/person. Non-USGBC members = $125/person. Additional fee after 9/25 + $25/person. Course fees include: Facilitator fees, handouts and refreshments. (Not included in the Registration Fees is the cost of the LEED GA Examination which is approximately $150 for USGBC members and $200 for non-USGBC members). Instructions on enrolling for the exam and finding the test site location are explained during the course.

More About This Course

The study group is an excellent preparation for taking the LEED Green Associate Exam. Participants will learn the U.S. Green Building Council’s  Green  Building and LEED Core Concepts Guide. Study sessions are a combination of facilitated peer-to-peer discussion and personal study. The total program includes 6 hours of facilitated group study sessions and an additional 5 hours of bi-weekly small study team sessions. Study teams will be assigned in Session One and should be comprised of 3-6 persons to maximize learning. The study teams meet bi-weekly outside the facilitated sessions for a total of 20 hours during the 8-week period. Our Faculty Members are top professionals in the green building movement! Facilitators Eric Doyle of Catalyst Partners and Sue Norman of DesignIs, are experienced LEED Accredited Professionals.

Eric Doyle has over 13 years of combined experience in the commercial office interiors and sustainable design/build construction industry. Beyond his expertise in sustainable building practices, he has a background in technical education and has facilitated training for hundreds of professionals from many countries around the world about LEED and green building fundamentals. Eric has managed or participated in over a dozen LEED projects, totaling over one million square feet from coast to coast.

Sue Norman is an interior designer experienced in all phases of a commercial design/build project. Her first career was in teaching and Sue currently teaches Green Advantage courses through  Grand Rapids  Community College as well as interior design studio courses at  Michigan  State University. Sue’s passion for sustainability is woven throughout her life and work. She created and manages www.easytobegreen.com, a sustainable design resource for interior designers. Sue was a founding member of the West Michigan Chapter of the US Green Building Council and was a member of the chapter’s first Board of Directors.
