Saint Mary's Health Care Lacks Cancer Center
The Lacks Cancer Center is the first comprehensive free-standing cancer center in West Michigan. A tobacco-free campus, and the ability for patients to order meals as they please, makes this a very patient friendly facility.
The windows on the exterior of the building are self-cleaning, using ultraviolet rays from the sun to break the bond of the soils to the glass, while rain water completes the rinse process. Waste steam from a solid waste incineration plant is utilized to melt sidewalk snow, and low-VOC paints, adhesives, sealants, and wood were used throughout the building. A roof-top garden covers two-thirds of the roof and offers a peaceful sanctuary for patients and families. The garden also provides the water retention benefits of a green roof.
