Van Andel Institute

Van Andel Institute’s Phase II will become one of just a handful of medical research laboratories in the Midwest to attain LEED certification, consistent with the region’s emphasis on green building. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects PC, the recent expansion will significantly increase the Institute’s capacity to impact lives by nearly tripling laboratory space.

The new building features such energy efficient mechanisms as: Photovoltaic panels; Heat recovery systems; Low-flow water fixtures that reduce water usage by 30%; A 27,000-gallon rainwater storage tank; Lab air sampling and control system; Lighting controls; Glass roof design and open floor plans to offer abundant natural light; The usage of locally-manufactured materials in the construction process, and continuous facility-wide improvements reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
