Innovative Project Awardees of the Past and Future

The USGBC-WM Leadership Awards promote outstanding green buildings, programs, and efforts by recognizing projects, organizations, and people who have made extraordinary contributions to achieving healthy, high-performing green buildings across the state of Michigan. Each year we celebrate these individuals at our Annual Party and Leadership Awards Ceremony, where their achievements are highlighted and awarded. One award that stands out a bit from the rest is our Innovative Project Award, which is decided based on a nomination and voting process.

The Innovative Project Award is designed to honor projects that break the mold of standard building construction, design, and operations. The projects in question exemplify innovation and astute practices that reflect the goals of U.S. Green Building Council of West Michigan (USGBC-WM)’s programs.

This past year we highlighted three projects in this category:

In third place we highlighted Synergy Consulting Engineers and McLaren for their McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital project. The facility provides a long list of services to the community, including a Level III Trauma Center/Emergency Department, Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute, comprehensive cardiac programs, medical/surgical units, and state-of-the-art women and children’s health services including a modern birthing center.

In second place Western Michigan University was awarded for their Campus Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger Network. In May of 2022 Western Michigan University, in partnership with Consumers Energy, unveiled 10 new dual-port electric vehicle chargers on campus capable of powering up 20 vehicles simultaneously.

We awarded our first place winner, TowerPinkster for their Kalamazoo College Natatorium project. TowerPinkster worked with Kalamazoo College to design a replacement natatorium that includes a NCAA competition-compliant pool with wet offices and classrooms, spectator viewing areas, and locker rooms.
